Received my "Raspberry Pi" book from Amazon today. Using this have managed to log in, launch GUI, and using the browser managed to connect to the internet and view web pages. Would not have been able to do this wothout the book - would thoroughly recommend this to anyone wanting to get started with the Raspberry Pi.
The "Raspberry Pi User Guide" is written by Eben Upton, a founding member of the foundation. The Introduction is inspiring and resonates with much that I have experienced regarding the teaching of computing in schools. Eben observes that many schools consider that teachng older teenagers how to use spreadsheets and search on the Inernet as IT qualification. How true and how boring for the teenagers.
The availability of the Raspberry Pi certainly will help change the perception of what computing actually is. The fun and incredible sense of achievement that programming can provide is bound to bring many more youngsters into this industry. Well done Eben Upton and colleagues.
I am keen to start a Raspberry Pi club in York for us geeks to get together and trade ideas and play. Anyone interested in meeting up over the Christmas break? I can provide the venue.
